Support Groups
Support Service
The Paul Sartori Foundation provides specialised palliative care within the Pembrokeshire community and the support service is one of a range of services we can provide.
When someone becomes seriously ill, we find ourselves in a totally new and confusing situation and we can experience deep sadness, uncertainty and fear. All the Paul Sartori Foundation community palliative care nurses and carers have developed skills to offer support and understanding at times like these. There does come a time when you may need extra support. The Paul Sartori Foundation has support workers who are able to offer you extra help.
What are Support Workers?
Support workers are trained as counsellors and offer their experience and understanding at difficult times. They are not trained as nurses or doctors so will not give you medical information.
How can you call on the support?
Through:
- Self referral
- The Paul Sartori Foundation nursing team
- District nurses
- Other voluntary and statutory agencies
When is support available?
The support workers can begin visiting the family when a patient is diagnosed with a serious palliative illness and can then continue to visit for as long as the family feels is necessary.
Special Support
At the present time there is no special support group running. The Foundation is looking to recruit in this area in order to re-establish the service.
Want to know more?
Please contact the Paul Sartori Foundation and ask to speak with the support workers. If they are not available, a message can reach them. Leave your name and contact number and they will get back to you.
Befriending Circle Project
Paul Sartori Foundation Pembrokeshire Hospice at Home is offering an opportunity for the adult bereaved in the county to meet together to make new acquaintances. It can be a very lonely place when the person with whom you have spent many years has died. Sometimes it is difficult to make that first step out of your front door. Everyone around is trying to be helpful but life still seems very hard to live. Paul Sartori Foundation already offers a one to one bereavement support service and a knitting support group and this project is another complementary approach to encourage the adult single bereaved to meet together socially.
The befriending circle will meet in Pentlepoir on Friday afternoons and will be led by volunteer Norah. Referrals to the circle will come through Paul Sartori Foundation, people from all parts of the county are welcome to join the circle. It is hoped that in response to demand a similar group will be run in the north of Pembrokeshire.
The initial meeting of the group takes place on Friday 4 April 2008 at 2.00pm, in Pentlepoir. Anyone who feels that they would benefit from joining the circle should phone 01437 763223 initially and register their interest for the attention of Lorna. The befriending volunteer, Norah, will then phone to confirm the venue for the circle. Please note that there will be no meeting on Friday 16th May 2008.
Fishknits
Fishknits, the charity knitters meet every Wednesday morning in Janes, Fishguard. The group has been set up to attract like minded knitters and provides an opportunity to give support to the bereaved and those actively living with a terminal illness and carers of the terminally ill. The group welcomes people of all ages , male and female, it is lively and friendly and extends a warm welcome to new members. Individuals can bring along their own knitting or can knit items to raise funds for the local Hospice at Home Charity, Paul Sartori Foundation. “ We recognise that the timing of the group meeting may not suit everyone and if anyone is keen to join the group we can organise another session to reach those who may be working – it would be wonderful to have two sessions operating. We are keen to expand the knitting support groups across the county and would like to be contacted from anyone else who has an interest.” Said Lorna Johns, Hospice Director. To join the group drop into Janes on Wednesday mornings around 10.30am or phone 01437 763223 and ask to speak to Lorna.
