The Paul Sartori Foundation - Statement of Purpose

As a registered charity we are committed to promoting the relief of sickness and suffering resulting from chronic or terminal illness, in particular from cancer and related complaints.

We strive to:

  • Treat everyone fairly
  • Regard the choice of the patient and the family as pre-eminent
  • Provide service based on need
  • Accept that the core of the work is the concern on the individual
  • Matching this with the highest quality of care

Who do we provide care for?

We provide a service throughout Pembrokeshire, for any Pembrokeshire resident over 18.

We charge no fees to the users of the service.  We rely on donations and funds raised through various activities.  Staff who provide care are all paid employees of the charity.

Clinical Care Co-ordinating Team

What help can we offer?

We can provide healthcare assistants and registered nurses.  Most of our healthcare assistants have National Vocational Qualifications in care or related fields.  All staff have extensive experience in a variety of settings. They can provide assistance with any of the following:

  • Help with all aspects of personal hygiene and dressing
  • Assistance with toileting and continence problems
  • Help with feeding
  • Administration of medicines
  • Helping with mobility
  • Care of pressure areas and pressure sores
  • Provision of emotional support
    • Providing someone to stay with the patient
    • To enable the main carer to spend sometime away from the home
    • This will enable more time for attending appointments, shopping or visiting friends

How to request care:

  • Through self referral by phoning or writing to us.
  • Through another professional such as social worker, district nurse.

Complaints Procedure

If you have a complaint about a service that you have received then please follow these steps.

        • Please talk the matter over as soon as possible with a member of staff (volunteer or paid)

with whom you have already dealt.

  • If you prefer to deal with someone not directly involved then ask to speak to the senior

            member of  staff present.

  • If this is not possible then please contact the senior nurse for palliative care if it is a nursing or

care issue. If it is a matter concerning volunteers, fundraisers or administrative staff, please contact

            the Hospice Director.

  • If you would rather put your complaints in writing, please send the letter to either the Senior Nurse,

            Palliative Care or Hospice Director.

What we will do

  • We will if possible try to resolve the issue within 24 hours but if not we will acknowledge your

            complaint within 2 working days.

  • We will if necessary investigate the matter and give you an update within 28 days.

  • Our response will give an explanation, an apology (if appropriate) and tell you what action we are

taking to prevent a similar incident in the future.

If you are still not satisfied

  • Your complaint will be raised with the Chairman of the Board of Trustees and a sub-committee

will review the case. Such a request for further investigation must be made within 28 days of

receiving the Hospice Director’s final response to your complaint.

(Anonymous complaints of whatever nature will be noted but not formally
investigated by the Paul Sartori Foundation)

Staff and Training News

Sophie Thomas (centre) with Joan James and Linda Hier

“Matron, Sophie Thomas, and Hospice at Home Co-ordinators, Joan James and Linda Hier, have all obtained their NVQ 4 in Management.  To achieve this qualification, the candidate must provide evidence of skills and knowledge in day to day management practice.  Areas covered include: leading change, recruiting and retaining staff, managing projects and ensuring compliance with legal, regulatory, ethical and social requirements.  The qualification is equivalent to a degree or HND.

Joan James said: “I never thought I would have a qualification at this level.  It was really hard work, but I learnt a lot.  Getting the NVQ has given me a real sense of achievement”

Sophie Thomas explained:

“It is a legal requirement that the Registered Manager has this qualification.  We made the decision to offer the opportunity to all the care management staff, because we work very much as a team, sharing tasks and responsibilities.  We all need the same skills to do our jobs effectively. “

The most recently appointed member of the Care Management Team, Deputy Matron Buffy Wheatley, has started working towards her NVQ4 this month “

European Computer Driving LicenceTraining

Jackie Moss (PA to the Hospice Director

“4 of the management team at PSF headquarters in Haven Road are working towards the “European Computer Driving Licence” qualification.

Hospice at Home Co-ordinators Joan James and Linda Hier, and Equipment Loan Health Care Assistant Pat Coombs are all attending weekly evening classes at Pembrokeshire College.  Jackie Moss (PA to the Hospice Director) is studying for the qualification on-line at home.

Linda Hier, who had never used a computer before she started in her present post in April 2006, said ‘I can’t believe how much easier my working life is now I have these skills.  We use computers in all aspects of our work.  The web is a fantastic source for all kinds of information for staff and patients on things like medication, benefits and support groups.  We can even print off maps and directions to help staff find patient’s homes.  We use databases and spread sheets to keep track of staff training and patient referrals and to put together the information on our work for our fundraisers and donors.  Almost all our presentations for training sessions and study days are now done on computer’

CCSIW Regulations

In the first half of 2007, the Foundation concentrated on getting all staff through the training required by CCSIW regulations.  This included study days and sessions on:

  • Moving and Handling
  • Protection of Vulnerable Adults
  • First Aid
  • Food Handling
  • Infection Control
  • Fire and Safety
  • Lone Working

Palliative Care Course

In the latter part of the year we ran the first of three new 2-day palliative care courses for all clinical staff.  The staff themselves identified the topics they wanted to cover  and these included

  • Pain management
  • Nutrition
  • Alleviating breathlessness
  • Difficult conversations
  • Treatment for cancer and motor disease
  • Dealing with palliative care emergencies.

All the training was very well received, with the following comments made on the (anonymous!) feedback forms:

“The best course I’ve ever attended.  Informative and helpful’

“Very interesting, lots of relevant knowledge and information”

“Clear, relevant and well presented”

The days were run by Sophie Thomas (Matron) and Buffy Wheatley (Deputy Matron).  Sophie commented: ‘It was a lot of work to design the sessions for this course, but we really enjoyed running these days.  We found that the level of knowledge that staff already had was reassuringly high and there was great enthusiasm to learn more.  Everyone really joined in and shared their personal experiences. It was an absolute pleasure to teach such enthusiastic groups”
